Ping Lessons for Website Owners

What’s a Ping and What Good Does It Do?

In blogging, the term “ping” is something that causes lots of confusion. Pings are part of blogging and necessary for your blog posts to be quickly indexed by blog directories. This is what a ping is: A ping is a program that sends information over the Internet from one computer or server to another computer or server in order to prompt a response from the receiving computer or server. Basically it’s a request that says, “Hey, there’s something new here. Come and check it out!” Pinging occurs when you post a blog entry and your blog software or a separate software program that you’ve set up pings blog directories and search engines to notify them that you’ve got something new going on. So, ping is both a noun and a verb. Kind of like you have Google (a noun) and you can Google (a verb). Pinging is necessary because without pings, it could take weeks for a search engine or blog directory like Technorati to discover that you’ve added a new post to your blog, and if you want your blog

Do you think Twttrstrm will be a hit with Squidoo and Twitter users?

Ask a question of your Twitter users from your own Twtrrstrm Squidoo lens! This is yet another of the branded sites Squidoo offers, like Monkeybrain or SquidVids. Basically, you type in some information and the system creates a page for you. Then you go in and edit it to your specifications and publish it to the world! Do I like it? I think it’s a cool idea. Not sure if it’ll take off like mad, though, because basically, it’s the same as the other cobrands - you could build it from scratch yourself - sort of. If you have plenty of Twitter followers, you could create a lens on Squidoo with polls and other modules that let people debate and build from there.
